Petrol pumps of Kiphire shut down

Kohima: Two petrol pumps in Kiphire town, the remote district headquarters bordering Myanmar, were completely shut down from Thursday owing to high taxation demand allegedly by one Naga underground (UG) faction.

According to reports received here the proprietors of the petrol pumps said earlier they had negotiated with a sum of Rs 20,000 to 30,000 as yearly tax, however, this time the outfit demanded Rs 1.50 Lakh, which was too high for them to pay.

The report said the closure would be indefinite and proprietors have written to the Deputy Commissioner Kiphire informing about the same.

Meanwhile, United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) President expressed dismay over the closure of the petrol pumps. The president said that the closure came as maltreatment to the student community as many students who have recently passed HSLC and HSSLC examinations were preparing to go for further studies and travel arrangements were going on.
