Shillong: After a gap of three years, a Khasi student from Meghalaya succeeded in clearing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Examination 2011, the result of which was declared on Friday.
Isawanda Laloo (26), daughter of Prof B Myrboh and Emika Laloo, is a resident of Nongthymmai and is currently doing her PhD in English from NEHU.
Ms Laloo managed to clear the civil service exams in her second attempt after a two-year- long preparation.
Out of 910 candidates — 715 male and 195 female selected for appointments to various central services like the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others, Ms Laloo secured the 850th position.
“I am grateful and happy to have reached this far but I am not satisfied with the rank and will make another attempt,” Ms Laloo told this scribe here on Saturday.
Ms Laloo completed her schooling from Loreto Convent School, Shillong and pursued her Higher Secondary studies from Army School, Shillong.
She graduated in English from St Stephen’s College, New Delhi and later pursued her post graduation in English from Delhi University.
“I am happy but I wish there were more of us from Meghalaya to have made it to the list. Nevertheless, I am sure there will be more aspirants for the civil services in the future”, she said.
Stating that her achievement is a boost to her morale, Ms Laloo was however, disappointed with her rank and not wanting to give up so easily she has decided to make another attempt with the hope of getting a better position.
Laloo urged the state government to provide more incentives to the youth of the state in terms of coaching centres which are lacking in the state.
“If we have coaching centres closer home, students don’t have to go outside the state to study and prepare for the various examinations and this would encourage many more young people to attempt the UPSC examinations,” she said.
In her message to the other students of the state, Ms Laloo said, “I urge all the students of Meghalaya to work hard, try harder, to never give up, to be motivated till the end and to strive hard towards the goal”.
