SHILLONG: The breakaway faction of Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B) has criticized the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) for calling a five-day-long bandh which brought the entire Garo Hills to a standstill.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, ANVC (B) chairman Rimpu N Marak said this kind of stand on the part of GNLA “is turning peaceful life of common man in Garo Hills into misery.”
The GNLA recently called for a 144-hour bandh demanding suspension of the ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
The outfit reiterated that doors are open if GNLA Chairman Sohan Shira wishes to join mainstream for overall peace and development of Garo Hills.
Peace Rally: The citizens of Garo Hills including students, NGOs and businessman and church elders will organise a joint prayer meeting on Sunday at Tura.
The decision to hold the prayer meeting was taken on Saturday at a meeting which was convened by the district administration.
Soon after the prayer meeting, a peace rally would also be taken out with a plea for maintaining peace and harmony in Garo Hills.
“We will condemn neither GNLA nor the State Government.
“Our aim through this event is to bring back peace in Garo Hills,” an organiser said.
