Tussle for Congress ticket

From Our Correspondent

NONGSTOIN: Dr Jova Marak, who was considered a front-runner for the Congress ticket for Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency, has suffered a jolt with the Block Congress Committee there cancelling her candidature as a ticket aspirant from the party, for her failure to attend a party meeting held at Rambrai recently.

Following the fresh incident, there now remain four candidates in the race for party ticket — former MDC JTS Thongni, Kingford Kharsyntiew, Kimfa Marbaniang and Nasstar Kharlyngdoh.

While speaking to this scribe over phone, Dr Marak alleged that she did not receive any formal official invitation for the meeting. She also explained that even if she had been informed about the meeting, it would have been impossible for her to attend it considering that the GNLA had enforced a bandh in Garo Hills on that date.

“I am a Congress party worker and also the Vice Chairperson of the Tura City Mahila Congress, so I have the right to contest from any constituency and no one can stop me and I will fight for my rights,” she added.

It may be noted that Dr Marak is considered by political analysts as the one with the maximum chance of winning the election from Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency provided she contest on a Congress ticket.

It is quite obvious from a political angle that Dr Jova Marak being a favourite among the people in Rambari-Jyrngam, the other aspirants are quite skeptical about their fate in the coming election, the analysts say.

Dr Marak has been making extensive tours in the area and has been listening to the problems of the area and is determined to bring about a change to that. She has in the last couple of months been able to garner the support and well wishes of the people from every village she has visited, the political observers say.
