Police official summoned on tinted glass of MLA’s vehicle
SHILLONG: The pressure groups, CSWO and TUR have expressed concern over Assembly privilege committee summoning a police official after he acted against the misuse of tinted glass in vehicle by Rambrai Jyrngam MLA, Kimfa Marbaniang.
In a statement issued on Monday, both the organisations said the DSP Traffic had asked the MLA to take off the tinted glass in the vehicle in violation of the order of the Supreme Court.
The pressure groups led by Agnes Kharshiing and Angela Rangad said the public servant being a law maker, should be aware of this and cannot misuse power by targeting an upright officer who was doing his duty as per law.
They also said that the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly privilege committee cannot harass officers who are working within the law. The pressure groups have also referred to the Supreme Court order and the panel which can exempt persons for using tinted glasses in their vehicles
“Equality before law is paramount and should prevail at all times and for everyone. Furthermore it has become common practice in Meghalaya that in order to overcome and abuse the Supreme Court order on red beacons, public servants, including officers use sirens and violate traffic rules during traffic congestion endangering the citizens. This culture of privilege and impunity should end,’’ they said.
