SHILLONG: The Society for Environment Protection and Sustainable Development has urged the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to reject any fresh proposal for establishment of cement manufacturing units, particularly in East Jaintia Hills.
The organisation, in a letter to the secretary of the ministry, said that unregulated mining, particularly limestone, by the cement manufacturing industries have caused land and water degradation besides causing damage to the environment and forest.
The NGO said that reward as well as compensation mechanism should be put in place to maintain the flow of life supporting ecosystem services.
