TURA: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday convened a series of meetings with all the deputy commissioners of Garo Hills region and officials of NRLM and Transport Department at the Chief Minister’s Office, Commissioners’ Building in Tura in the presence of Advisor to the Chief Minister Thomas A Sangma and Commissioner of Divisions, Garo Hills Region, P Sampath Kumar.
During the meeting, Sampath Kumar briefed the chief minister on the strategy, structure and other aspects, including formation of self help groups (SHGs) in the villages which is being undertaken under National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM). He also mentioned that teams have been selected to visit the villages for formation of SHGs and to ensure that all of them have bank accounts and bank linkages before March 31, 2020.
The chief minister, while stressing on women empowerment in the region, said that many of the women SHGs of the region have no idea about financial inclusion and have not availed any loan so far. He, therefore, directed the officials to sensitise the public on financial inclusion to the SHGs and to motivate them by sharing the success stories through photos, short inspiring videos besides providing simple explanations on the concept of the programme.
The officials of NRLM apprised the chief minister about the challenges faced during their field work and said that few villages were apprehensive of forming SHGs in the area. The chief minister directed all line departments and block staff to assist SHG mobilisation in their respective areas. During the discussion with the deputy commissioners, South West Garo Hills DC Ram Kumar highlighted the interventions in the education sector in the district and informed that a mobile app was being used to check schools and students.
Attempt has also been made to find out the bottom 20 Class X students. Coaching classes are being held every Saturday so as to monitor their preparation for the SSLC examinations.
Further, all the deputy commissioners from the Garo Hills informed that the schools were lacking teachers for science and mathematics, which makes learning difficult for students especially in higher classes.
The CM also instructed all the DCs to identify and establish model villages before December.
