Shillong: The recent ostracusation of one Johnson Marak of Joiram village in Balat, East Khasi Hills by the villagers after accusing him of practising black magic and witchcraft has been resolved after the intervention of the East Khasi Hills police.
Informing this on Monday, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills AR Mawthoh said that both the parties have compromised in a gathering which was called by the police between the villagers and the victim along with his family members.
“The matter has been settled and the victim has returned back to his village with the villagers’ promise to leave him unharmed,” Mawthoh said.
Recently, Johnson Marak was allegedly threatened and driven out of the village by some villagers on suspicion that the former was practicing witchcraft on one Hiral Sangma who fell sick due to some orthopaedic problem and blamed it on the ‘magic spell’ cast by Marak.
On hearing the news, the villagers reacted violently and attacked Marak with dao, spear, rod and sticks while dragging him to the school ground where they attempted to kill the victim. Fortunately, Marak escaped through the jungle.
The matter was later taken up with the SP, East Khasi Hills who immediately investigated into it and sent two deputy superintendents of police to accompany the victim to the village on Thursday last to conduct an enquiry.
Meanwhile, the FIR filed against the villagers of Joiram has been withdrawn by the victim.
