Nongbri launches rotavirus vaccine

SHILLONG/TURA: As part of the observance of Poshan Maah, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District, M. War Nongbri launched the Rotavirus Vaccine (RVV) vaccination in the district on Wednesday. The function was held at Baniun village under Mylliem C&RD Block, East Khasi Hills.
Speaking on the occasion, War said that RVV is a vaccine used to protect against rotavirus infection, a highly contagious virus, and it is the most common organism that causes diarrheoa among children which may lead to hospitalisation and even death.
To mark the launching of the vaccine, War along with other officials administered vaccine drops to infants.
The DC appeal the parents, members of NGOs and community leaders to come forward and join hands with health officials of the district to ensure that it is administered to all babies to enable them to enjoy a healthy life.
The programme was also attended by District Nodal Officer, RVV Dr R R Marak, DHEO East Khasi Hills O Sumer, P. T. Passah, BDO, Mylliem C&RD, Dr M. R. Basaiawmoit, DM&HO, East Khasi Hills, Dr. D. P. Syiem, Sr. M&HO, In-charge Pomlum PHC, representatives from the Dorbar Shnong, Pomlum, teachers and students from the area.
Meanwhile for South Garo Hills district, it was launched at Baghmara Civil Hospital Conference Hall.
Speaking during the launching, DRDA Project Director, M T Sangma urged the gathering to get their children vaccinated and to avail all benefits that the Government is giving free of cost.
Earlier, DM&HO from Baghmara, Dr Lily Sengme Marak informed the gathering about Rotavirus and that it mostly affects babies and young children.
She informed that symptoms of the virus may include severe diarrhoea, stomach pain, fever among others.
