SHILLONG: Convenor of Maitshaphrang Movement, Michael Syiem has written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma requesting him to implement the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012.
In the letter to the CM, he said that he has appointed October 5, 2015 as the date on which the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act 2012 comes into effect making it mandatory for a married man and woman to compulsorily furnish a marriage certificate for all official purposes. He also referred to the RTI findings filed by Maitshaphrang Movement recently where it reflected that none of the departments in the state have made the marriage certificate mandatory for any official purposes.
He stated that the primary objective of bringing this law is because of many cases of women with children, especially those living below the poverty line, who are abandoned by their respective husbands without giving any child support in the absence of a law on compulsory registration of marriages.
“We sincerely urge you to ensure that this law is implemented in letter and spirit without any further delay so that purpose of this legislation is served and that such problems can be prevented in future,” he said.
Syiem further said that the act will be an important tool to serve and protect the weaker section of our society.
