GUWAHATI: As part of its initiative towards a plastic-free society and acting upon the clarion call made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Thursday, declared 20 more domestic airports as ‘single-use plastic free’. As many as 55 Indian airports are now ‘single-use plastic’ free.
The 20 airports which are declared as single-use plastic-free include Silchar, Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Allahabad, Aurangabad, Belgaum, Bhuj, Gaya, Gorakhpur, Jabalpur, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Jorhat, Kangra, Khajuraho, Leh, Rajahmundry, Rajkot, Surat and Tuticorin.
Guwahati, Imphal, Kolkata were among the other 32 airports, that had been included during phase 1 of the project.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day speech, had urged the citizens to avoid using plastic bags and free themselves of the habit of using single-use plastic bags by October 2, 2019.
Single use plastics are those which are used for once and then thrown away. Items like plastic cups, plastic bags, straws, plastic water bottles and food packages comes under the single use plastic category.
