Guwahati: Assam police on Wednesday claimed to have gunned down four Maoists militants in an encounter at Deopani area in Sadiya of Eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district. Two of the insurgents managed to flee while police recovered arms from the encounter site.

Police sources said the militants were taking shelter in the house of one Bal Bahadur Limbu at Borbora area in Deopani when police raided the house this morning. In the ensuing gun-battle, four Maoists rebels, Madan Gogoi, Sidhartha Buragohain, Kamal Buragohain and Rajat Chetia were killed. One policeman was also injured in the gun battle.

In a statement issued to the media here, the ULFA faction said, “This NCTC is a serious attempt to suppress our people. If the NCTC of Government of India becomes operational in Assam, our people will face a new era of India state terrorism.”

“Mr Gogoi by giving his unqualified support to the NCTC exposed his lack of concern for the rights of citizens in a federal set up. It shows that he and his party are out to undermine the India federalism, however limited it is,” the ULFA statement said.
