SHILLONG: UDP legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has slammed the State Government for allowing the law and order situation in the State to deteriorate by failing to take immediate measures to address the concerns expressed by the NGOs over the ongoing voters’ enrolment drive.

The UDP legislator also came down hard on the constitution of the all-party committee to resolve the issue, saying, “Everyone is aware of the fate of the committees which were constituted in the past. It is only a time buying tactics on the part of the Government.”

“I fail to understand why the Government is adopting a delay tactic to address the issue when all the political parties have unanimously accepted that the issues raised by the NGOs are genuine,” Basaiawmoit said while speaking to reporters here on Thursday.

He said that the Government could have temporarily suspended the enrolment drive and removed the facilitation cell as demanded by the NGOs while aggressively pursuing the matter with the Election Commission.

“I do not understand why the government is taking time to discuss the issue with the EC. The government should have informed the EC that there is stiff opposition to the ongoing enrolment process in the State,” Basaiawmoit said.
