60 state docs to be trained

EMRI’s five-day programme with Stanford varsity

 Shillong: In a first of its kind in the North-East, 60 government doctors serving in rural areas of the State will be trained by the faculty of GVK EMRI and Stanford University of the United States of America.

The training module, developed by GVK EMRI and the Department of Medicine, Stanford University, is exclusively developed to suit the needs of emergency patients in low resource setting which is a common fact in rural India, Associate Partner from GVK EMRI Hyderabad Dr Srinivasa Rao, told reporters here on Monday.

The five-day training scheduled from Tuesday in Shillong and next week in Tura will have 30 doctors in one batch.

“The participants will be trained on various aspects which included emergency medicine like the initial evaluation and stabilization of sick and injured patients,” Dr Rao said.

Common emergency cases and essential skills will be covered in the programme through lectures, case studies, video training modules, hands-on simulation based skills training, he added.

The cost of training for each participant is Rs 10,000 and the cost will be borne by the state government.

The same module has been imparted to doctors serving in rural areas of states like Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Karnataka.

Meanwhile, Dr Rao also informed that the training will also benefit other emergency patients in government secondary level health institutions as well.

Training District and Sub-District Hospital doctors in emergency medicine skills will help in continuity of pre-hospital care and save more lives, he stated.

While it takes three years to be an emergency specialist in the US, it would covered in a nutshell in five days here, Faculty at the Stanford University Dr Ayesha Khan, one of the trainers, said.

Meghalaya is the fourth state in the country to have conducted such trainings for the doctors serving in rural areas.
