The much awaited project of laying a bitumen and

waste plastic road in Jhalupara has been delayed

even though the project was expected to be implemented in the month of February.

The Shillong Cantonment Board had planned to construct the four kilometre bitumen road stretch in Jhalupara at an estimated cost of Rs 30 lakh taking into account the city roads which often get damaged due to heavy rains.

The chief executive officer of the board, S Prabhakaran while talking on the delay said that the earlier tender given to a contractor was cancelled since he could not start the work within the stipulated time.

“Now a fresh tender has been called and we hope to get some good bidders after which it will be placed before the board for its approval,” Prabhakaran added.

However, even if the tender process is over soon, the work for the much awaited road can start only after the rainy season but the board has asserted that it will try its best to start the work at the earliest. To lay one km of plastic road 3.75 metre wide, 9 tonnes of bitumen and 1 tonne of waste plastic are required for coating while a normal road requires 10 tonnes bitumen for each kilometre. The roads constructed from the bitumen and waste is believed to last longer than the normal roads and can be considered as the ideal option for a city like Shillong which receives heavy rainfall.
