AGARTALA: In yet another desperate attempt to make its presence felt, militants belonging to the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) kidnapped six persons from a remote area of South Tripura district.
A group of four-five insurgents armed with automatic weapons swooped down in the house of Kulendra Reang (55) at Ujanbari, a village close to Indo-Bangla border, under Nutunbazar police station on Wednesday late night and abducted five villagers including the house owner at gun point.
Police said, the incident took place when five labourers who were engaged in making a makeshift room in the house of Kulendra were having food. While returning, the insurgents also took away another villager to show the way leading to Bangladesh but he did not return yet, said a police officer.
Kulendra who had surrendered before the security forces five years back, is now an employee of Nutunbazar HS School.
The incident has caused panic among the villagers as militants are still moving in and around the area to collect yearly subscription.
After receiving the information, senior police officers along with reinforcement rushed to the spot and launched combing operation to rescue the kidnapped villagers.
However, security forces could not trace the abducted persons yet.
Earlier, five tribals were kidnapped by the NLFT insurgents from Gontuisa, a remote tribal hamlet in Dhalai district bordering Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT) of neighbouring Bangladesh on June 7.
According to police, the ultras have managed to sneak in to the neighbouring country with the kidnapped persons.
Though BSF authorities had been requested to take up the issue with its Bangladesh counterpart, they are still in militant captivity.
