SHILLONG: After a long gap of 27 years, Meghalaya has made it to the quarterfinals of the Santosh Trophy.
The last time the State team had made it to the quarter-final stage of the tournament was in 1985 in Madhya Pradesh.
The State team won all their three matches in the pre-quarterfinal league stage which was played at Baragarh in Odisha.
The biggest win for the State team in the league stage was against Chandigarh on Tuesday with a margin of 5-1 goals. Meghalaya also defeated Pondicherry 4-0 and beat Madhya Pradesh by a solitary goal.
The State team would now travel to Bhubaneswar, Odisha to play the quarterfinal league matches. The State is placed in the same group with Manipur, Goa and Uttar Pradesh.
When contacted, State team coach L Darlong expressed satisfaction that the team had qualified for the quarterfinals after a gap of 27 years.
“We would try to continue this good run even in the quarterfinal stage,” Darlong said.
He however admitted that it would be a huge task for his team since they would be playing against Manipur and Goa, both very good teams.
