Shillong: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma informed that the Parliament has on Wednesday passed the Bill for creation of a separate High Court for Meghalaya.

The Bill, that paves the way for creation of separate high courts for the three Northeastern states of Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura, was piloted by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, Dr Sangma informed.

Recently, Deputy Chief Minister and in charge Law, BM Lanong, had stated that the State is ready to get its own High Court but is still awaiting a formal communication from the Central Law Ministry.

“With the infrastructure already in place, a separate high court for Meghalaya is ready to function but this will depend on the response from the Union Law Ministry,” Lanong had said.

Relating to funds allocation, Lanong informed that once the Union Law Ministry gives the go ahead, funds and subsequent filling up of posts will be worked out.
