MAWKYRWAT: The Sankur Rikynti Khain Nonglang & Mawkyrwat Hat has declared Mawkyrwat market, one of the oldest markets in South West Khasi Hills, along with Tyllong Saitwait Market at Tynnai and Pebah Market at Mawrap, as plastic-free markets.
Manager of the Sankur Rikynti Khain Nonglang & Mawkyrwat Hat, L. Shangdiar informed that the decision was taken by the Executive Committee of the Sankur following its meeting which was held on September 21.
Shangdiar said that during the meeting, the executive committee had briefly discussed about the menace of plastic which has destroyed the environment especially the water bodies besides market places and even villages.
“Plastic has destroyed the soil, cultivating fields and water bodies that supply drinking water to villages,” Shangdiar said, adding that after thorough discussion about the issue, the executive committee has decided to ban the use of plastic in Mawkyrwat, Tyllong Saitwait and Pebah markets.
“Therefore, all the shop keepers including hawkers as well as the public should not use plastic from now onward,” Shangdiar said adding that in place of plastic, people can use other alternative materials for packing of items for trade in the market.
