UEFA vows to eradicate racism
Madrid: UEFA Chairman Aleksander Ceferin on Tuesday promised to eliminate racism in football, calling on governments to join efforts aimed at tackling the plague.Ceferin’s remarks came after incidents that took place during a Euro 2020 qualifying match between Bulgaria and England, a game that was halted twice by the referee and was on the verge of suspension, reports Efe news.England’s 6-0 away victory in Sofia was marred by a section of the home fans who chanted monkey noises, did Nazi salutes and wore shirts with the slogan “No Respect,” a rejection of UEFA’s anti-racist Respect campaign.The abuse could be heard through the televised broadcast of the match. Several groups of fans were evicted from the Vasil Levski stadium in Sofia. (IANS)


Japan beat India 4-3
Johor Bahru: The Indian junior team lost a high octane game to Japan 4-3 at the Sultan of Johor Cup on Tuesday.Japan took an early lead in the game, their very first attack earning them the first penalty corner. From the resultant drag flick, Wataru Matsumoto converted it into a goal to give them the lead.India didn’t let their heads drop though and almost drew themselves level with a penalty corner of their own in the third minute. But Pratap Lakra’s effort was saved by Takumi Kitagawa in Japan’s goal. India will face Australia in their next round-robin league-stage match in Johor Bahru on October 16. (ANI)


Gunn retires from cricket
London: England all-rounder Jenny Gunn has announced her retirement from international cricket on Tuesday.Gunn has made 259 appearances for her country, winning three World Cups and five Ashes series. She leaves with 204 wickets and 2702 runs under her name across all formats.Only Charlotte Edwards (with 309) has represented England women more than Gunn, who made her debut in 2004.Gunn said: “I have made one of the hardest decisions and decided the time has come to retire from international cricket. I started as a young kid playing the game I loved for fun and I could only dream of becoming a professional cricketer. I’m so grateful for the support throughout my career and I couldn’t have done it without my friends.” she added. (ANI)
