MHRC focuses on human rights defenders

SHILLONG: An interactive session and discussion on `Growing Synergy’ between Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) was held on Thursday in the commission’s conference room.
Noor Ain Khan, Secretary, Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority, who was the chief guest, stressed on the importance to understand fundamental rights and the manner in which one can address the human rights issues effectively.
He stated that helping others who are not aware of their basic rights is the task that the HRDs have to take forward, adding, however, that it is a challenge task.
During the presentation, chairperson (Acting) of MHRC, P.J.P. Hanaman, explained the role of the commission and the definition of the HRDs. “Human Rights Defender” is a term used to describe people who, individually or with others, act to promote or protect human rights.
The meeting was chaired by Arnold S. Nongbri, Superintendent of MHRC.
New member joins
B Giri (retd) District and Sessions judge, Jowai has assumed office as the new member (judicial) of MHRC.
