NONGPOH: Education Minister Prof R C Laloo on Wednesday appealed to the teaching community of the State to devote themselves to the upliftment of education system in the State.

Speaking at the launch of the Pre-Service two years Diploma in Elementary Education (D. El. Ed) Course at District Institute of Educational Training (DIET), Saiden Nongpoh, Laloo expressed hope that with the increasing number of trained teachers in the State, the number of dropouts will gradually decrease. He also urged the trainees to make full use of their time in the institute to acquire teaching skills and knowledge for long term benefits.

Chief Adviser to Govt. of Meghalaya D D Lapang, Principal Secretary Education P S Thangkhiew, Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep among others were also present on the occasion.

Conducted by DIETs, the two-year course for teachers of elementary (primary and upper primary) level aims to create a reserve of trained elementary teachers for the recruitment process.

Laloo, a teacher himself, said that quality of education depends on the quality of teaching as the teacher can mould the student in such a way so as to enable them to pursue a good future. He also said that a classroom will be complete if there is proper coordination and cooperation between the teacher and the students.

Earlier, the in-service teachers were deputed to the DIETs to clear off the backlog of an enormous number of untrained teachers along with some pre-service candidates who joined in. But from this year the government has approved to provide stipend for students intending to become teachers.
