Three-day mourning for former CM

 SHILLONG: The State Government on Wednesday announced a three-day state mourning for former Chief Minister Dr FA Khonglam, who breathed his last at a private hospital in the city on Tuesday. During the state mourning, the National Flag will be flown at half mast and there will be no official entertainment, a government release said.

The sudden death of Dr Khonglam has been condoled by different sections of the society including the State Government and the Chief Minister himself.

The Chief Minister, in a condolence message to the bereaved family of Dr Khonglam, said that he was a leader loved by the people and he was well regarded not only in the State but all over the North East.

“His sad demise has left a vacuum in the political arena of the State and is a great loss to the State as a whole,” he added.

Earlier in the day, a condolence meeting of Ministers and Government officials was held.

The meeting attended by many Cabinet Ministers and Chief Secretary WMS Pariat conveyed its sincere and heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and prayed to God to give them strength and fortitude to bear this loss. A two-minute silence was also observed.

Governor RS Mooshahary, MPCC chief DD Lapang and Ampareen Lyngdoh visited the residence of Dr Khonglam and conveyed their condolences to the family members.

The HSPDP has also expressed its condolence over the sudden death of Dr Khonglam.

The last rites of the former Chief Minister will be held on Friday at 1.30 pm at the Cemetery of Malki Presbyterian Church.
