Non-payment of salaries, arrears

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: Deficit school teachers of the State under the umbrella of Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) have threaten to resort to a series of agitations from next month if the government fails to release their salary pending since January this year including release of the pending 30 per cent of the arrears.

Issued a one-week deadline to the State Government to respond to their demands, the teachers said, “It has been five months but the teachers are yet to receive their salaries.”

The Association stated that this is not the first time that they have apprised the Education Minister of their problem, while adding that they had submitted a letter to the Education Minister last month and after failing to get any response they had to resend the letter last week.

The deficit school teachers also stated that they are due to receive 28 per cent of the DA arrears from April to June 2010, 2 per cent DA arrears from July 2010 to February 2011, 43 per cent from March to June 2011 and 49 per cent from July 2011 to February 2012.

“We were supposed to receive the sanctioned amount for the first quarter — March, April and May — but the same was not released. When we enquired, we were informed that the salary has been transferred to the civil deposit due to non-withdrawal of salary before March 31,” KJDSTA president ED Nongsiang informed.

He also informed that the deprived teachers will hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss and work out strategies to get their due.

“Similar incidents had occurred last year too when we had to wait for 3 to 4 months for our salaries to be disbursed and the same has been repeated this year also. We want to pressurize the government to ensure that such things don’t happen in future,” the teachers said.

There are 17 deficit schools with 186 staff (both teaching and non-teaching) run under the deficit system by the State Government.
