SHILLONG: UDP legislator Ardent M Basaiawmoit along with UDP MDC Latiplang Kharkongor, KHNAM MDC Adelbert Nongrum and two HSPDP MDC s- Enbin K Raswai and KP Pangngiang would sit on a one-day hunger strike to express their disappointment over the lack of seriousness on the part of the Government to resolve the long pending inter-state boundary dispute with Assam.

The hunger strike would be held at the State Central Library premises on May 29 from 10 am to 6 pm.

“We are holding this hunger strike since we are disappointed with the efforts taken by the Government to resolve the long-pending boundary dispute,” Basaiawmoit said while addressing a press conference here on Friday.

“We would want the Government to take immediate steps to stop all kinds of atrocities against the indigenous population residing along the borders which are meted out by the Assam police,” he said, while asserting that they were not talking only about solution to Langpih issue but also other disputed areas like Block I and Block II where the local people continue to be harassed by the Assam police.

“This issue has been hanging fire for the past so many years. We would no longer allow the Government to adopt any delay tactics in resolving this issue,” the UDP legislator said.

He also informed that the hunger strike would be followed by a series of agitation programme if the Government does not commit to resolve the boundary issue at the earliest.

Basaiawmoit also urged upon the NGOs and individuals including politician to participate in the hunger strike.
