Rs 10 coin valid tender
TURA: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh has issued an order directing all traders including the general public to accept Rs 10 denomination coins as it is valid tender all over India. The order comes following reluctance by many people to accept the coin due to suspicions about its genuineness. “According to RBI rules, those who refuse to accept the Indian Currency can be liable for action under section 124A (sedition) of IPC,” the order read.
BSF holds programme
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF) 97 Bn on Thursday organised a special function at BOP Umkiang, East Jaintia Hills, for the students of Holy Cross Hr Secondary School. The school students, who were on a five-day educational tour to Kolkata, were welcomed by the battalion after the trip’s culmination during the function. The tour was organised by the school and facilitated by the BSF, where the BSF provided transportation in the remotely situated border area. The Principal of the school, Father Roby, and the students expressed their gratitude to the BSF for facilitating their visit.
EGH Nokma claims market
TURA: The office of the Kolmesalgre A’king Nokma in East Garo Hills has dashed off a letter to the deputy commissioner claiming that the Williamnagar Main Market continues to fall under his A’king and that the same was never handed over to the government. In his letter to the DC, the Nokma informed of his intention to reclaim the market and thereby stop all collections in the form of tolls and taxes from the area from November 1. “It was never handed over to the government or the district council as my predecessors were made to believe. RTI findings reveal that the market area was never acquired by the government from Kolmesalgre A’king and therefore, we are reclaiming the area,” the letter visibly signed by CD Momin read. The letter also urged the deputy commissioner to instruct concerned departments especially the Williamnagar Municipal Board (WMB) to refrain from collecting taxes from the A’king area stating that it would be a constitutional violation of their scheduled rights and amount to violation of the ‘Prevention of Atrocities on Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Act, 1989’. The letter also enclosed copies of RTI findings including notification, agreements of other nokmas and the map of the A’king for the convenience and action by the authority.
Illegal stone crushers in WGH
SHILLONG: A man was beaten by some people who were running an illegal stone crusher in New Bhaitbari, a release said on Friday. The man, viz. Akirul Islam, was sent by the Vice Chairman, Forest Development Corporation of Meghalaya, to click photographs of the crushers that were run illegally polluting the environment and disturbing the locals around when he was bashed up by the owner and his men. The Vice Chairman has also informed the Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills,Tura and IFS Satish regarding the incident, the release added. He has also urged the government to take immediate action against those illegal crushers and saw mills.
