Guwahati: A sudden burst of showers inundated most of main thoroughfares in the heart of Guwahati city causing hardship to commuters for most part of the day on Tuesday. The inadequacy of the drainage system in the populous city was once again exposed today when it failed to carry rainwater after the heavy downpour that lasted only about an hour only. Many important parts of the city including part of arterial GNB and GS roads, Fancy Bazar, Chatribari, Rehabari, Paltan Bazar, Christianbasti, Silpukhuri, Ambari were inundated under knee deep water throwing the heavy office hour traffic out of gear. Though the city corporation has been engaging its workforce in desiltation of major drains in the city before the onset of the monsoon season this year to prevent water logging of city roads, today’s waterlogging has raised question about the efficiency of the entire drainage system in the city.
