Itanagar: Rajiv Gandhi University Vice Chancellor Prof David R Syiemlieh has been appointed as a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), official sources said on Tuesday. Syiemlieh took over as Vice Chancellor only seven months ago.

While working as pro-vice-chancellor of the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Syiemlieh (of History department) had taken over his new assignment on October 5 last year on being appointed by the President of India for a period of five years. He is likely to demit office on June 1 on receipt of clearance from the HRD ministry.

Syiemlieh is the third educationist from the Northeast region to be appointed to this coveted post after K R Damle (1967) and Rose Mary Bathew (Khabuli) from Meghalaya as UPSC chairman in 1992. (PTI)
