NONGPOH: Giving a new twist vexed boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam, two NGOs — FKJGP and the Confederation of Ri-Bhoi People (CORP) — have threatened to launch agitational programmes if the State government fails to remove all the installations set up by Assam government in Meghalaya.

The two organisations made this announcement on Tuesday after conducting a spot inspection at Khanapara.

Raid Marwet Syiem Ken Syiem and Them Marwet Rangbah Shnong Jeremy Lyngdoh were also present during the inspection.

During the inspection, it was found that the Assam Government has claimed Khanapara, which belongs to Meghalaya as Guwahati- 22 and set up a Forest Check Gate and MV check gate. A police colony was also set up by the Assam Government where many families probably of Assam police personnel are staying there.

Speaking to this reporter after the inspection, the FKJGP’s North Khasi Hills District unit chief Eddie Kharbani said, “If the State Government fails to remove the police outpost, MV Check Gate, Forest Check Gate and the Police Colony immediately set up by the Assam Government within the lands of Meghalaya then we will be compelled to embark on agitational programme.”

The CORP general secretary David Kharnaior came down heavily on the State Government for its “lethargic attitude” towards resolving border dispute with the Assam.

Syiem said, “The lands in question (Khanapara) is part and parcel of Meghalaya and has been forcibly been occupied by the Assam Government.”
