JOWAI: A boundary pillar erected at Zero Point, bordering Karbi-Anglong district of Assam and Khanduli in Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, was allegedly destroyed by a group of unknown miscreants suspected to be activists of Karbi Students’ Association on Sunday.
Sources informed that the boundary pillar erected at Zero Point was uprooted and discarded at a place 1 km inside the border at Khanduli village.
As soon as the news surfaced, members of the FKJGP Jaintia Hills visited the area.
FKJGP president, Tuesday Lytep, later informed that the Karbi Students’ Association is organizing agitation programme in Karbi Anglong district, Assam on Friday to protest against the development activities conducted by the Meghalaya Government. The Karbi Students’ body demanded that Assam Government should ask Meghalaya Government to stop all development activities in the border area.
Lytep also informed that the PWD contractor who was assigned the work of repairing the road from Khanduli village to Zero Point was threatened following which he had to stop the construction work.
The FKJGP had urged the State Government to take up the matter seriously, failure of which would force the federation to initiate action.
“We demand that Meghalaya Government should take immediate steps to prevent any encroachment by Assam,” Lytep said, adding that the incidents at Khanduli and other bordering villages of Meghalaya was an indication of Government negligence.
