SHILLONG: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO), on Monday, submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister’s Office and to all the Cabinet Ministers on the amendment of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. In a statement issued here, the secretary of CoMSO, Roy Kupar Synrem said the organisation demands to amend Paragraph 12A (b) and the paragraph 20 of the Sixth Schedule.
He added that the situations unfolding under the BJP-led NDA government is a cause of concern for the minority communities.
Synrem said that the intention of the BJP to implement the CAB, Uniform Civil Code, anti-conversion law, beef ban, making Hindi language mandatory, the Indian Forest Amendment Act 2019, pose to be a threat to the people. The CoMSO has demanded that unrepresented tribes should not be elected as MDCs to the respective councils and the Dorbar Shnong should be retained and not changed to village councils or municipal councils. However, he said that the organisation welcomes the move to give funds to the District Councils through the Article 280, the anti-defection law and renaming the councils to Territorial Councils.
