SHILLONG: According to a survey conducted in the few city based markets on Saturday, it has been seen that vegetable prices have gone beyond the reach of the commoners.

Green Chili is selling at Rs60/kg in Iewduh whereas it is selling double the price in Laitumkhrah Municipal Market (LMC). “This double pricing trend in LMC is seen in the case of every vegetable,” said a resident of Lumsohra.

In the case of green peas which are available from Rs30 onwards in Iewduh, residents of Jail Road and Polo are getting the same at Rs60 onwards. Consumers said that Iewduh remains the best buy market for anyone since they get value for their money in comparison with other markets of the city.

“Capsicum is selling at Rs40/kg and bitter gourd starts at Rs20/kg in Iewduh which is simply unthinkable in the other markets,” said a consumer from Iewduh.

“On bargain, the vendors reduce the price of the vegetables but the problem still remains since all vegetables are priced double than Iewduh,” said a resident of Jail Road.

In this Iewduh, common vegetables like tomatoes start at Rs25, French Beans at Rs40 whereas coriander leaves are selling at Rs50 for a bunch. These rates have either doubled in other markets or are selling at Rs20 higher than the traditional market.

Meanwhile, these consumers said that the district administration should keep a tab on the higher rates being charged by vegetable markets in the city other than Iewduh. Questions are being raised on the price variations throughout the city.
