SHILLONG: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has urged the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) to not surrender to the Centre with regard to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
In a statement issued here, he said that the people of the state do not need Home Minister Amit Shah to clarify on the CAB and stated that the state government should not beg the Centre to make laws for minority indigenous communities.
“It is the state government that should be responsible for making laws for minority communities in the state,” Nongrum said.
“The need of the hour is that the state government should come up with ideas on how to bring together the political leaders of the North East states to unanimously decide on the protection and safety of the people”, he said. Nongrum also echoed the statement of UDP MDC Paul Lyngdoh who said that the state will have to revisit the history of its relations with India, if the Centre decides to go ahead and implement the CAB.
He went on to call the CAB as ‘conversion and acceptance by bargaining’ or the ‘citizenship amendment for Bangladeshis’.
