Death of NEHU PhD student

By Our Reporter

Shillong: The North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has urged the University authorities to expedite the probe into the death of Ph D student James Todiuwang.

Todiuwang had died under mysterious circumstances on March 17. Todiuwang, a Ph.D student of NEHU from Tamenglong, Manipur was allegedly killed in a motor bike accident near gates No.2 and 3 of the NEHU Campus, Shillong.

The NEHUSU has termed the alleged accident as ‘doubtful’ and ‘mysterious’.

According to reports, James had died due to the motorbike accident when he accidentally hit a pedestrian, and subsequently fell down from the bike which caused severe damage to his body.

In a fresh FIR filed at the Mawlai police station on May 11, the victim’s father Gamlinang alleged that the death of his son was not a result of accident but a cold-blooded murder as the postmortem report has stated. “The death has been caused due to hard, blunt impact on the head,” Gamlinang said in the FIR.

In the postmortem report, Dr PS Nongrum, a senior medical and health officer in Shillong, said: “In my opinion, the cause of death is due to shock and hemorrhage following head and thorax injuries caused by a hard, blunt object.”

“There is no sign of any lead as to what really happened or how, on that fateful Saturday evening, despite the police assurance that investigation is on’, NEHUSU president Kitbok Lyngdoh said.

It may be mentioned that the NEHUSU had submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor on May 9, 2012 seeking his intervention in the probe.

The NEHUSU chief further stated that the ‘multiple injury marks all over his body does not correspond to the injury that might result from a motorbike accident.’

Taking strong cognizance into the matter, the NEHUSU has demanded a thorough and proper investigation in to the matter and ensure a sense of security among the students of the University.
