The infant, Saldona Ch Momin, was kept in the custody of his teenaged aunt when the tragedy occurred.

The child’s father, Shaibirth Sangma, had left home in Daldagre locality of Tura for an errand while the mother had gone to fetch the eldest daughter from school. The younger sister of the mother, aged thirteen, was asked to keep an eye on Saldona and his elder brother of three years.

According to the family, the young aunt who was engaged in a conversation with one of her friends failed to notice the two brothers move out of their sight and it was only much later that they noticed the elder brother playing all by himself.

By the time they ventured out to locate the infant his body was found floating on the surface of a small water tank that had been left uncovered below the house.
