TURA: On a day of hectic political moves in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, the opposition Congress alliance has decided to seek an audience with the Meghalaya Governor and demand a special session of the council to prove its majority after the ruling NPP alliance that was reduced to a majority walked out before facing a floor test in Tura on Wednesday.
Victorious Congress candidate and new Deputy Chairman of GHADC, Mettrinson G Momin, told The Shillong Times that the opposition MDCs have decided to head to Shillong and meet with Governor Tathagata Roy to seek a special session after the results of his election revealed that the NPP led Executive Committee headed by Dipul Marak had lost its majority.
The opposition Congress alliance candidate Mettrinson Momin defeated the NPP alliance candidate Augustine Marak by 15-13 votes.
The Congress alliance has been miffed with GHADC Chairman Denang T Sangma for adjourning the house sine die without taking up the no-confidence motion.
“The position of Council Chairman is supposed to be neutral but he (Denang) was not. Although he had admitted the agenda for the no-confidence motion, yet, he walked out along with the CEM and the ruling benches by adjourning the house following the defeat in the deputy-chairman election,” said Mettrinson Momin.
Meanwhile, clarifying on the allegations levelled against him, GHADC Chairman Denang T Sangma said that the decision to adjourn the house sine die was taken after the NPP alliance walked out of the session and pandemonium broke out.
“When the entire ruling benches walked out with whom would the opposition have debated the no-confidence motion? How could there be a vote on the no-confidence motion when one side is absent. Moreover, commotion was being created all around and it was justified to adjourn the house,” claimed Chairman Denang Sangma.
