Agartala: Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) Kapil Sibal has assured Tripura that he will consider the demands of the state in regard to allowing recruitment of elementary level teachers without holding Teachers Eligibility Test (TET). State Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty said here today that recruitment of 4600 under graduate teachers had been held up over past few months following mandatory provision of holding TET under Right to Education Act (REA).
Referring to recent meeting of the education ministers in New Delhi, Mr Chakraborty said, “We have initiated the process of recruitment of under graduate teachers in 2002, 2006 and 2009 and in the meantime in 2010 REA has came into implementation that made TET mandatory and put the state into trouble.” He however, sought intervention of Mr Sibal on the issue stating that since the process had begun long back and interview and selection of candidates were completed in existing system, they should allow to be recruited without TET.
“Not only Tripura several other states have raised voice against TET, as without developing course curriculum and infrastructure of coaching it is impracticable to conduct TET,” Mr Chakraborty said.
Altogether 13 states had introduced TET at the beginning and two states – Assam and Uttar Pradesh-were in deep trouble with corruption charges, he added. He also underlined that ministry had decided to review the no detention policy and continuous and comprehensive evaluation following objection from different states and added that unless academic infrastructure including sufficient number of teachers were employed, it would be difficult for implementation of REA.
