SHILLONG: The Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja is likely to inaugurate the housing complex located at Nongmynsong next month.

Indicating this here, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngoh said, ” Tthe Union Minister recently told me that she will come in July to inaugurate the housing complex.”

The upcoming Housing complex, consisting of 600 units in 35 blocks, has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 30.44 crore.

However, surprisingly a whopping amount of Rs 97 lakh will be spent on the transformer in the complex.

The Minister said, “There are around 600 units in the complex so it will require huge amount power.”

Earlier, a date was fixed for its inauguration but due some unavoidable circumstances, the inauguration was postponed.

According to Lyngdoh, the department has already asked MeECL to speed up the electrification in the complex.

The much-delayed Housing Project, which was initiated way back in September 2008, was taken up by the State Government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Kumari Selja had laid the foundation of the project on December 20, 2007.

When asked for the delay, the Minister said that the department is now trying to commission all the 600 units of the complex as inaugurating mere 64 units will not yield any positive benefits.

Slum devp programme: The Centre has released the second installment of fund for the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (ISDP), a component of the JNNURM.

Disclosing this here on Friday, Urban Affairs Minister said the Centre has released Rs 5.32 crore as the second installment.

The ISDP project was sanctioned by the Centre for an amount of Rs 21.30 crore for five notified slums of Shillong — Mawbah, Lower Mawprem, Pynthorumkhrah, Demseiniong and Kynjat Phutbol. The scheme is being implemented by the Hindustan Prefab Limited (HPL).
