New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the second time on Friday after the Congress, TMC, DMK and the Left created an uproar over violence in Northeastern states over the amended citizenship law.
No sooner the House met at noon after the first adjournment, TMC MP Derek O’Brien raised the issue of violence in the North East, but Chairman Venkaiah Naidu did not allow him and proceeded with the listed questions. In the meanwhile, Congress MPs, too, came in support of the TMC leader and soon other Opposition parties started raising slogans against the Citizenship Act, violence in the North East, including Tripura.
As ministers were replying to questions, some TMC members, including Derek O’Brien, trooped into the well of the House and some Congress MPs were seen standing in the aisle raising slogans against the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
TMC member Dola Sen even tore a piece of paper while standing in the well.
Demand for all-party on deteriorating situation
Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma on Friday demanded in Rajya Sabha that the Prime Minister should immediately convene an all-party meeting on the worsening law and order situation in the North East, including Assam, following passage of the Bill in Parliament.
Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, Sharma said an all-party meeting was a must in view of the fallout in India’s external relations particularly with Bangladesh.
“I will urge the government and the Prime Minister in particular to immediately convene an all party meeting (with) chief ministers of all the states and to reassure that mere statements and blame game is not going to happen. This is also having a fallout in India’s external relations, particularly with the sensitive state of Bangladesh which cannot be allowed,” Sharma said in his Zero Hour mention.
Action by the Indian Army in the states in not the only answer, the Congress leader said, adding that there should have been political dialogue and consultations. (PTI)
