SHILLONG: The Central government has constituted the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal for the purpose of adjudicating whether or not there is sufficient cause for declaring the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) of Meghalaya as an unlawful association.
The HNLC was yet again banned by the Centre last month.
An order published in Gazette of India on December 13 said that in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 5 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967), the central government has constituted the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal consisting of Justice N Kotiswar Singh, Judge of Gauhati High Court for the purpose of adjudicating whether or not there is sufficient cause for declaring HNLC as unlawful association.
In another order, the Ministry of Home Affairs, North East Division said that with the consent of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Albert W Lanong, Joint Registrar of the court, has been appointed to act as Registrar to Justice Singh.
Lanong will discharge the functions of the Registrar of the Tribunal in addition to his existing duties in the High Court.
This order will come into effect immediately and remain in force till submission of the report by the Tribunal.
