SHILLONG: In what can be termed as a boost to the sports infrastructure in the state, the work for installation of floodlights at the J N Stadium, Shillong will begin in August.

Informing this here, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Sports and Youth Affairs Bindo M Lanong said that the tenders for installation of the floodlights and laying of synthetic tracks at the JNSC would be called soon.

It may be mentioned that the North Eastern Council (NEC) had earlier approved the funds for the Rs 5-crore project at J N Stadium here as part of the Council’s scheme for promoting sports in the region.

“The NEC has sanctioned Rs 5 crore to install floodlights and the first installment of Rs 1.8 crore will be released soon,” NEC officials said.

The State Government had earlier in the year laid the artificial turf at the JNSC (football ground).

Meanwhile, reacting to a query, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the Shillong Football League will be held at the Stadium since the First Ground is currently under renovation and this has actually delayed the floodlights project.
