SHILLONG: While other political parties are busy finalizing their list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in the State, MPCC chief DD Lapang on Monday parried a question on the announcement of Congress candidates, even though he stated that it would take a long time before the list is finalised.

“We have not even started the process of selecting the candidates. In fact, the party is yet to issue the application forms,” Lapang told reporters here on Monday.

He further stated that it would be difficult to predict when the party is going to announce its list of candidates, adding, “We have to follow a long procedure before the list of candidates is finally approved,” Lapang said.

When asked about the recommendations made by the Block Congress committees, he said that the Block Congress units are proposing the name of candidates. “It does not mean that the names proposed by the Block Congress would be approved,” the MPCC president said.

“Even I don’t know if I would get the ticket. Pray that I get the ticket to contest the upcoming Assembly election,” Lapang said on a lighter note.

Meanwhile, Lapang refused to comment on whether party tickets would be issued to Independent MLAs who are supporting the Congress-led MUA Government in the State.

Rongram legislator Ismail R Marak and Phulbari legislator AT Mondal (both Independents) have already expressed their desire the upcoming election on Congress ticket.
