TURA: The High Court of Meghalaya on Friday ruled in favour of the Opposition in the Council and directed GHADC Chairman Denang T Sangma to continue the session which was earlier abruptly adjourned.

Soon after the NPP-led ruling alliance’s candidate Augustine Marak lost the Deputy Chairman’s election to the Opposition’s Metrinson G Momin on November 27, GHADC Chairman Denang T Sangma adjourned the House sine die without taking up the No-confidence motion moved by the Congress. In the Deputy Chairman’s election, Metrinson secured 15 votes whereas, ruling candidate Augustine Marak was able to get only 13 votes while one MDC’s vote was found invalid.

Following the development, a petition was filed in the High Court by the Opposition bench seeking that the completion of the No-confidence Motion be allowed. A hearing on the petition by the HC took place on December 11, resulting in the verdict in favour of the petitioners on Friday where it directed the holding of the listed No-confidence Motion within a week.

Meanwhile, GHADC Deputy Chairman, Metrinson G Momin hailed the HC ruling and termed it as the first steps towards victory.

“I am grateful to the High Court of Meghalaya for giving the welcoming verdict. It has taken time but it is always better late than never,” Momin said.
