SHILLONG: Students from across Meghalaya have extended their support to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) while condemning the attack on teachers and students on the campus on Sunday.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) said that they condemn the state-sponsored RSS hooliganism on the JNU campus.
“This is exactly how Hitler’s youths operated. They tried to control it, FAILED. Now they are destroying it. This is how Hitler behaved wherever the Germans opposed him”, the statement said.
It drew parallels between Sunday night’s incident and Kristallnacht or the Night of Broken Glass, also called the November Pogrom, during Hitler’s regime in 1938.
“Remember, history has never been kind to fascists and you can never douse the fire that burns in the eyes and hearts of the fighting students and the youth,” the MPYC said.
The MPYC extended its solidarity to the students and the teaching community of the JNU.
The statement also said, “All persons who stand against communal and fascist forces are being targeted. We appeal to the common citizens of India to unite and stand against these divisive forces and safeguard and protect the Constitution; for a united India envisioned by both Ambedkar and Gandhi.”
Meanwhile, the North Eastern Hill University Students Union (NEHUSU) also condemned the indiscriminate assault on JNU students. “We stand with our brothers and sisters during this tragic period.”
“Students are universally recognised as the future of the world, yet, regretfully, the students of JNU were brutally attacked inside the campus which is accepted as a secure environment. This attack portrays the senseless and oppressive ‘goondaism’ mind-set of the attackers,” the student body said.
“We stand by our student fraternity through this dark period of our history. We send our support and solidarity to the teachers, students and our counterparts of JNU whose rights and sense of security inside the University Campus, has been shattered,” the NEHUSU said in a statement.
