WAHKEN:(PYNURSLA): The Sieng Riti Institute in Wahkhen village organised a cultural show on Wednesday that showcased Khasi dance and various traditional practices.
The theme of the event was “learn, preserve and impart”.
Young performers, led by National awardee Komik Khongjirem and award-winning musician Rojet Buhphang, presented traditional music to a host of dignitaries and media persons.
The participants, most of whom were villagers, also presented age-old practices like phawar, iasiat khnam, shad mastieh and kiew iing thymmai.
The institute, with the help of a group of media persons, is documenting the traditional practices and musical legacy of the Khasis and the documentary will be released this year.

Speaking on the occasion, local MLA and chief guest of the cultural programme SK Sunn said, “I am thankful to the Sieng Riti Institute for not only preserving the traditional music and culture but also promoting them. We know that a community that forgets its traditional music and culture loses its identity.”
The chief guest also acknowledged the contribution of national awardee Komik Khongjirem and gave him Rs 50,000.
Sieng Riti has been preserving and promoting traditional music and culture since 2005 without any government help.
