SHILLONG: While a local court in New Delhi recently awarded death punishment to the four accused in the Nirbhaya gangrape case, surprisingly in Meghalaya, a galore of alleged rape cases have come to the fore.
On January 2, a minor girl was sexually assaulted in West Jaintia Hills district and the WJH police was quick to arrest all the accused persons involved in the crime. Some of the accused persons were juveniles.
Similarly a few days back, another POCSO case was registered in South Garo Hills where a minor girl was sexually assaulted in a village near Baghmara and here too, police arrested the accused.
Another incident came to light when a 70-year-old woman was allegedly raped by one person in Ri Bhoi district in December 30, 2019.
Sharing her views on the matter, CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing said that in today’s society people are not feeling safe.
She also said that courts now need to ensure that these rape cases are taken to its logical conclusion at the earliest.
“ If police does not take action, the courts must reprimand them,” she said adding that that the Government needs to be more stringent while dealing with such cases.
