GUWAHATI: The anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) protest in Assam led by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has become synonymous with black flags waved at ruling BJP-AGP-BPF leaders in the state especially chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State’s PWD, Finance and Health Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal.
Activists of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) have made it a point to wave black flags at the leaders of ruling coalition comprising of the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) demanding the repeal of the CAA terming anti-constitutional and contrary to Assam Accord signed on August 15, 1985.
Union Minister of State and MP from Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency in eastern Assam, Rameswar Teli was on Friday waved black flag by AASU activists while he was sharing a meeting with senior district BJP leaders and MLAs in Dibrugarh Circuit House.
A couple of days back, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal cancelled his official, visit to Majuli river island constituency which he represents in Assam Assembly, apparently to avoid facing the protest and black flags.
Meanwhile, making of change of stand, the ruling BJP in Assam, which has expressed desire to hold face-to-face to AASU leaders on every clauses of the CAA, now has stated that it was no longer interested in holding talks with AASU given that a section of AASU leaders in guise of protest against CAA have been campaigning for floating a new political party in the state.
General Secretary of the AASU, Lurin Jyoti Gogoi has been very vociferous in announcing the intention to float a new political party in Assam in the greater interests of the people of the state.
“If the AASU is going to float a new political party, there is no point talking with them anymore. We will contest in the battle of ballot,” senior State BJP leader, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Earlier, in response to call for talks made by the BJP leader Dr Sarma, the AASU, however, had stated that it was not willing to hold talks with the state BJP leader but wanted to talk with only the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in regards to CAA.
