SHILLONG: KHADC CEM Latiplang Kharkongor on Tuesday said a meeting of MDCs and different stakeholders will be held on Thursday to discuss the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule.
Speaking to reporters here, he said discussions on the proposed amendment will be held with MDCs and stakeholders which include KSU, FKJGP, HNYF, Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong ka Bri u Hynniewtrep (association of headmen) and Meghalaya People’s Labour Union (MPLU).
He said the meeting is significant as it will be held ahead of the visit of Rajya Sabha MP and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, Anand Sharma, to Shillong. “We are looking for a unanimous voice on the matter”, he said, adding that Thursday’s meeting will also discuss means to strengthen the Sixth Schedule.
Kharkongor added that they would urge the Committee to remove the words “unrepresented tribes” from the Sixth Schedule during the proposed amendment and would also demand that the total number of seats in the KHADC be increased to 37 with 35 MDCs to be directly elected through adult suffrage and two nominated members, one of whom should be a woman.
