Clean India project to be launched at Qutab Minar

New Delhi: With the twin objectives of attracting more visitors and providing a hygienic environment in around tourist destinations across the country, government will launch the Clean India project at Qutab Minar on Tuesday.

Round the clock garbage clearance, maintenance of parking lots and toilets and proper signages at the heritage complex are some of the steps to be carried out under the campaign.

The pilot project will be launched by Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay.

Clean India campaign has been initiated by the ministry with the objective to increase tourist arrivals to the country and to improve quality of services and provide a hygienic environment in and around tourist destinations across the country in sync with the 12th Five Year Plan of the Centre, said a senior Tourism Ministry official.

The campaign is a multi-pronged action and comprehensive strategy to ensure an acceptable level of cleanliness and hygiene practices at tourist destinations for an inclusive and sustainable development of tourism through ownership and involvement of private and public sector stakeholders. The project will also address issues like providing drinking water facilities, conversion of Qutab Minar complex into friendly zone for physically challenged persons, tourist help desks and deployment of volunteers for better management amongst others.

The Ministry in coordination with Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has identified 36 monuments in the first phase of campaign.

The initiative aims at creating a collective mindset that promotes cleanliness and hygiene.

ITDC, the public sector undertaking under the ministry, has been entrusted with the partnership of the pilot project of the prestigious campaign. (PTI)
