SHILLONG: Taking strong note of reckless driving by truck drivers, the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners & Operators’ Association (MCTOOA) president A Shanpru said that the body has from time to time served notices to truck drivers operating along the national highways to avoid alcohol while driving.

The recent accident at Barik point where one Govin Chetri (30) and his 2-year-old daughter Mahek Chetri were killed on the spot while his wife Pushpa Chetri later succumbed to her injuries, when the motorcycle (ML 05H 861) they were travelling in collided with a truck (AS 01AC 3272) has raised eyebrows on the reckless driving on part of the truckers.

When asked about the action which MCTOOA can take against such drivers, Shanpru said, “It is the government’s duty to punish the offenders as we cannot take law into our hands. We had written to the State Government to look into the matter.”
